It Doesn't Run My Life

“I had tried everything out there, Nutrisystem, diet workshops, Weight Watchers. Every fad diet—you know, the South Beach Diet the X-Factor diet or the F-Factor or whatever it is—I have done them all. I am serious. This one works, and it’s easy.”

Susan Williamson of Columbus, Ohio discovered OurSkinny on a girls’ trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. She met a friend for lunch—the friend looking absolutely fabulous, confiding to Susan, “I’ve lost twenty-five pounds, and it was the easiest thing I have ever done.” Susan didn’t have any health problems—she didn’t have much energy either—but after reading about the program, she decided to give it a shot. This was on July 1, 2013. Susan lost 88 pounds in time for her 50th high school reunion, where one old friend she had known since kindergarten come up to her and said, “I just want you to know, I finally asked somebody today, why didn’t Susan come to the reunion, and they said ‘She’s right there!’” Susan thought, “Oh I like that!” but of course she’d been hearing it all weekend: “You look fabulous.” “You’re gorgeous.” “You look better than you did in high school!"

Today, she will tell you that she is more energetic at 68 than she was at 20, 30, or 40. “Living the whole thing to me means that I don’t want to be tied down or have to fool with weighing stuff or measuring stuff. I want to go where I want to go, do what I want to do, and have the energy to be doing what I was doing forty years ago.” “I have found that with this program, once you are maintaining your weight loss, if I want a cupcake I have a cupcake, because it’s taught me such discipline that I know the next day I will be right back on track.” “Now that I am where I am, if I want something I have it.”

Before she tried OurSkinny, Susan lived in quote-unquote “food hell.” On the one hand, she was very involved with her seventeen-year-old granddaughter, who had battled anorexia. “She’s turning around,” Susan is happy to say, “but I was dealing with her not eating anything. One day she was a perfectly normal eighth-grade kid and the next day… oh! It was awful. I guess there is a pattern to it, the binging and purging…

“In the midst of this my husband—his sister-in-law is into raw this and raw that and the green drinks and essential oils—well, he came home one day and says, ‘ I’m going to do these green drinks.’ So he buys that Vitamix, and I said, ‘You can do whatever you want, but I am not doing it: I am not making it, and I am not cleaning up after it…”

“Next thing, all of a sudden he reads a book his brother’s given him, The Seven Deadly Foods, decides that he has some kind of allergy or an intolerance, and decides he is going gluten free, soy free, peanut free, dairy free, sugar free, corn free, and there’s another one.. and I looked at him and I said, ‘I beg your pardon? What are you talking about?' “I said, well, are you sure you don’t want to do this with your third wife, because this one is not very happy about it!”

Susan never did the green drinks, and eventually, she got to a point where she just didn’t know what to fix for dinner. Every night, instead, she would grab a bottle of wine and get a box of Red Oval Stoned Wheat Thins and a hunk of blue cheese. “Maytag blue cheese, Roquefort, Papillon, whatever, I don’t care,” she recalls. “

“I am a blue cheese snob and I am a wine snob, and I will tell you that. I will openly admit that.” “So I would sit down and I would have my half a bottle of wine and I would eat anywhere from half to a whole sleeve of wheat thins, with a pound block of cheese… and I am a master knitter, it is one of my favorite things to do—very sedentary—and I would sit there and I could just hold that knitting right there on that huge stomach.” “I was heavy before but I packed on 15/20 pounds,” she snaps her fingers. “Just like that!”

“Let me tell you,” she tells us. “I had tried everything out there, Nutrisystem, diet workshops, Weight Watchers. Every fad diet—you know, the South Beach Diet the X-Factor diet or the F-Factor or whatever it is—I have done them all. I am serious. This one works, and it’s easy.”

OurSkinny was created by Dr. Paul S. Bradley, in collaboration with a team of Nurse Practitioners and Registered Dietitians. The focus is balanced nutrition: shakes, bars, and snacks, and one healthy meal every day. Susan loved the concept: “It’s not like Nutrisystem, where you buy it and it’s all fixed and you don’t learn anything. “That’s one thing that we do not do at our house anymore—no processed food—and I read every label, and I know the difference between a good carb and a bad carb and what not to eat.”

These days, Susan is a ball of energy, and if you don’t believe it just ask her about OurSkinny. She has become a true believer. Indeed, the program was a revelation for her almost right away: “After the first week, I am up at 5 in the morning and I go to bed at midnight and I don’t stop in-between. I don’t. I feel fantastic, and I am constantly going somewhere doing something. The seventeen-year old's got this place to go, that place to go, whatever. I just do my shakes. Throw ‘em in my purse.” “I have worn Chocolate Pro shakes more than once down my front because I have had to slam on my brakes in the car, and of course, that just drives her crazy, ‘Just don’t drink it!’ but whatever…”

Susan loves food, she loves to eat, and she is very creative. “The list OurSkinny provides you is incredible!” she says. “I mean the choices! You can have game meat, you can have beef, you can have shellfish, you can have veal, you can have lambchops, whereas a lot of programs will restrict you.”

Once she figured out that she would be able to eat a wide variety of foods, she never got bored. (She was even willing to share some of her secrets, which we have collected in another post.) “OurSkiny is not something that drags me down or oh my God, I have got another day. It doesn’t run my life in that way.”

Instead, it became a way of life for Susan, her OurSkinny coaches like family. "This is truly saving my life," she says, "and I will do it for the rest of my life. “In fact, I will never eat a regular breakfast again. Number one, I am not a breakfast eater. Never have been. I don’t like eggs. Never have. I will have my shake for breakfast and have my bar mid-morning... "Now, if someone said we are going to have Belgian waffles, I would think, ‘Okay I can do that…’ but then I will be right back at it, having my shake at 3:30."

"From the minute I started on OurSkinny, I have never been hungry, and the trick is: (she points to her phone) my whole day is laid out right here on my calendar, every day. The only time I had any trouble when I was cutting the late night shake out, but that’s what keeps your metabolism going overnight. That’s my lemon-raspberry. That’s my dessert. I never skip it now."

"Have you ever had McDonald’s iced coffee? That was real tough one for me to give up. One of my favorite things. So I figured out that I could go get this sugar-free, fat-free creamer. I use Toriani sugar-free caramel syrup, put that in the bottom of my Turvis—three squirts—plus a cappuccino shake (mix it first, water up to the label, dah, dah, shake it up. Fill it up with coffee. Tastes exactly like McDonald’s."

"I get the Chicken Soup with Pasta, but I never get bored with it. I go to Sam’s and get those huge bags of the carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli, and I steam a whole big pot of it and serve it with dinner. Then, with the leftovers I will take my soup and take a quarter or half cup of the steamed vegetables and stir them in there. It’s very good. I like it a lot. Put a lot of pepper in it. Love it."

“I can’t stand green drinks. I love spinach but please don’t make me drink it! I didn’t think I would like OurSkinny’s Summer Fridays, either, but my friend Peggy—she’s a fruitaholic— she makes a smoothie with fresh pineapple, oranges, and fresh peaches, and I thought… AHA! I take Sparkling Ice’s peach nectarine flavor and mix that in a Vitamix with ice and a Summer Fridays. Tastes just like it!

"I take boneless skinless chicken breasts and trim the excess fat. Next I take fresh squeezed lemon juice, Penzy’s Greek Seasonings, and just fresh garlic. Put that in a plastic bag, shake it up, and marinate the chicken in there, usually all day. When you are ready, fire up the grill. I usually do 8 or 10 of them at a time, because, let me tell you, warmed over, they are wonderful, and I don’t have to worry about dinner for two nights. Fabulous."

“I am a water girl, and you put that in there: if you don’t do the water, you won’t be successful, and I am serious about that.”
