Finally, Something That Works!

“I don’t call OurSkinny a diet because the first three letters of that word are D-I-E. I didn’t want to die. I wanted to live. So I made a lifestyle change." LaTrell Boddie’s father was a preacher, and she has a preacher’s instinct of her own. Following gastric bypass surgery, she lost 86 pounds with the help of OurSkinny. Today, LaTrell wears a size 14/16, down from a size 26, and she is singing OurSkinny's praises to anyone who will listen: “It has given me a new outlook, and I have confidence that I did not have before.” “The weight loss has given me a new lease on life,” she says.

Since her surgery and subsequent weight loss, LaTrell’s other weight-related symptoms have improved. “I used to suffer from sleep-apnea,” she notes, “Being 86 pounds lighter I don’t have to sleep with the machine anymore, and I am not taking all the medications that I used to take.” There are other benefits as well. “I have energy that I never knew I could have before. I am not tired and — it’s wonderful — I have added water aerobics to my workout routine. I go three times a week, and I love it!

"I have been shopping like you wouldn’t believe, because I don’t have to shop in the plus-size department.” The most important things for LaTrell, of course, are her health, her faith, her family, and the confidence that comes from having successfully made a change. “You know, it’s kind of difficult carrying around 302 pounds. You feel like the world is looking at you because of those 302 pounds…. “Now when they look at me I feel like they see me, the real me, and not the weight. “

The decision to undergo bariatric surgery is never to be taken lightly. The surgery (and there are several different methods) involves the partitioning of the stomach and reconstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. As LaTrell puts it, “It was a tough decision, because it’s a permanent one.”

In LaTrell’s case, she was going to have to have surgery either way “I had a hernia — a bleeding ulcer on top of a hernia — and I was told as a part of the surgery to repair the hernia they could go in and do the gastric bypass at the same time.”

Even so, it was not an easy decision. In addition to her consultations with the doctors, she discussed the matter with her daughter and her pastor. Later, once she had decided to go through with the surgery, she told her extended family and her church family, and their support has made all the difference.

“My daughter, my family, my church family, everyone has been very supportive of the decision that I made to lose the weight, and they have been cheerleaders for me throughout this journey. Because it’s not a quick fix. It does take dedication and determination, and I thank God that I have them here to help me through it.”

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about bariatric surgery. One’s appetite doesn’t just vanish and neither do the pounds, and gastric bypass patients are often advised to consume 60 to 80 grams of protein a day, if not more. In almost every case that requires protein supplements. “A lot of people think gastric bypass surgery is a quick fix,” LaTrell warns, “It’s not. You still have those cravings for foods that you know you’re not supposed to eat.”

LaTrell tried numerous other diet programs first: “I had for years been looking for a portable and economical way to lose weight, because losing weight is a challenge to many of us. Medifast. Weight Watchers. You name it; I have tried it.” “As bypass patients, we are required to do protein shakes on a daily basis, and the OurSkinny shakes were the only ones that worked for me. I tried the Atkins and I tried the Muscle Milk, all the others, and none of them were digesting in my system as they should. The OurSkinny shakes I have no problem with.”

LaTrell’s post-operative program called for 30 grams of protein a day, and each OurSkinny Mini Meal has 15 grams of high-quality protein. “I use the shakes as breakfast and as my dinner meal,” she says. “My favorites are the Orange Dream and especially the Chocolate. There’s no aftertaste. Not too sweet, not too bitter.”

But more than just a necessary complement to surgery, for LaTrell, the OurSkinny diet has become the driver for a complete lifestyle change. “I don’t call OurSkinny a diet because the first three letters of that word are D.I.E. I didn’t want to die. I wanted to live. So I made a lifestyle change.” “It’s been affordable. The shakes are easy to use.” she says. “You just add your water, shake, and go. How much simpler could it be?”

“I can’t thank you enough for developing the Our Skinny Program. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to go into the mall these days. I use to dread shopping in the past because, due to my size I had to always get pants with elastic in them or cotton pants as you see in the photo because I needed them to stretch or I had to shop in only plus size stores. Now I can go into just about any store in the mall and shop and find fashionable clothing and I LOVE IT!

“You don’t know what a difference it has made in my life not to mention the boost in my confidence because I now love looking in the mirror. I have even traveled by airplane 3 times during this past year which was something in the past that I never would have done because of my size. Once again, I can’t thank you enough of introducing me to Our Skinny! “Finally, something that works!"
