Time to Buckle Down

“It was really easy for me to incorporate OurSkinny. It’s just easy in general.”

Keriann Dineen never had any issues with her weight. “I was an athlete, I could eat almost anything and I never had to worry.” Once she graduated, however, her metabolism changed. Her pants were getting a little more snug. She can pinpoint it exactly:

“When I turned 23, I started realizing that I couldn’t eat just whatever I wanted. I am still so young, and I didn’t want to feel uncomfortable with myself. I knew it was only going to get worse as I get older, and I realized that I need to learn healthy habits now before I am that age where it’s harder to re-teach myself.”

“I was like, ‘I need to buckle down.’” Keriann lost 10 pounds with OurSkinny and gained confidence, a better sense of how to care for her body, and a vision for what the future might look like. Now maintaining her weight on the OurSkinny program, she says, “I had never seen my body look that way, and now that’s my motivation. I am happy this way. I feel healthy. And I know what I want to look like as I age.”

You may have heard about the freshman fifteen, but that’s all just fun and games. Out in the real world, as our athletic achievements recede into the past, it gets harder and harder to maintain healthy habits. Father time and mother nature await… and responsibilities somehow seem to multiply.

Keriann was working two jobs and, like so many entering the working world, she wasn’t exactly making healthy choices. She wasn’t really working out.

“I would play vollyball and stuff on weekends,” she recalls, “but it wasn’t consistent. It wasn’t like, oh, I am going to work out three times a week. I just never had to worry about it before.” “I knew I had to start doing something,” Keriann says. “I needed to learn to eat better, but I had no idea what to do.” Fortunately, the Wellness Coaches at OurSkinny were there to help.

“I wanted to get a routine,” she says. “I wanted to lose the weight, sure, but it wasn’t about losing it all in two weeks. I wanted to learn how to eat healthy, to get in a habit of working out, to lose weight the right way, so that I would be able to keep it off.”

“It was really easy for me to incorporate OurSkinny,” Keriann insists. “It’s just easy in general.” “Normally, in the morning, I always drink a shake. I don’t see the day in my future where I won’t want to drink that shake for breakfast. Otherwise, I am just going to eat a big bowl of cereal. I don’t know when the day will be when I don’t want to do it at all.”

“I have to eat something in the morning, otherwise, I get obnoxious,” she laughs. “I used to eat a really big breakfast, but now I drink a shake around nine or whatever and I am good for the morning. Sometimes I will have to eat a couple almonds or a piece of fruit, something to hold me over a little bit, but it just depends on how busy I am working.”

Keriann eats a full lunch – her main meal – before she heads to her second job. But it was the little things that made the difference: portion control, knowing which foods to eat and which foods to avoid, choosing healthy snacks when she was on the go. Exercise. But she did struggle. “I have a really bad sweet tooth,” she admits. “I love candy. I can eat a disgusting amount of candy. Ice Cream. I mean, I craved it, and that was the biggest struggle for me when I was trying to do it on my own. But I think the OurSkinny Bars, having the chocolate, helped satisfy that craving.”

Keriann started with a New Year’s resolution and a goal of losing 8 to 10 pounds by St. Patrick’s Day, but the pounds just weren’t coming off fast enough. Once she discovered OurSkinny, she thought she would lose the weight and then just go back to her normal routine. “I was really strict for three or four weeks so I could lose it all really quickly.” Once she reached her goal, however, she had a few bad meals and it wasn’t as much fun as it had been.

“I had worked so hard,” she said. “I mean, I did struggle a lot of times, and sometimes I would cheat. Sometimes I would splurge and have a handful of Skittles or whatever maybe, but I eventually realized that if I eat a little bit more unhealthy, I just have to workout more. Get with the program again.”

“I have learned to treat myself and then get right back on track. Like tonight. After the photoshoot, I think I might go to Buffalo Wild Wings and treat myself. Drink a beer to celebrate or whatever and just kind of splurge a little. But then, Saturday, it’s back to my routine.”

OurSkinny trainer Nathan Mikeska worked with Keriann to establish a workout routine that has become an enjoyable part of her week. “I hadn’t ever been in a routine before, and I wasn’t exactly sure which exercises I should be doing to target the areas I wanted to. Before, I would have just ran and been like, ‘That should be enough.’ But it turns out you need to actually build muscle for you not to looks as flabby.”

“I talked to Nathan and that’s exactly what he’s helped me with. My thighs, for instance, which is where I can see it. After a few weeks, I would see that I was toned, my waist smaller, whatever the case may be, and it was super encouraging.”

Keriann works out three to five times a week, beginning with 25 to 45 minutes of cardio and one of several workout plans that Nathan designed for her. As for the cardio, because she has chronic knee pain, she focuses on incline walking and then some time on the elliptical or on the stationary bicycle.

Keriann is enjoying the summer of 2014. “I went to the beach last weekend, and I mean I put on my swimsuit and I was happy. I was like, ‘You know what? This feels better!’” “Now I am just maintaining, which I didn’t know how to do before. I still do the shakes in the morning and I will always take a bar with me to work because it’s so easy and it fills me up and why not.”

When asked what she would say to someone considering the OurSkinny program, Keriann says, “It’s easy to put it off, but it’s a lot easier if you do it right away.”

Keriann didn’t wait, her lifestyle is no longer holding her back, and she is happily looking forward to whatever comes next. “Don’t even put it off!” she says. “I feel like too many people are like, ‘Well I will just wait til next month… I decided to just do it right away so that I can enjoy it longer. Enjoy looking fantastic for the beach or whatever and enjoy it while I am still young.”
